Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker has announced some new funding for the Owen Sound and Hanover Police Services.
In a release on November 4th, it was revealed that the Owen Sound and Hanover Polices Services would be getting a $187,748 grant from the Civil Remedies Grant Program. The provincial government is investing 2.5 million dollars in cash and proceeds seized from criminals and investing it in local police forces. Hanover and Owen Sound Police will each purchase a new vehicle with an automatic licence reader, which will help combat crime like human trafficking and improve police and road safety.
Funding through the Civil Remedies Grant Program is being made available to law enforcement agencies and community partners for 33 local projects focused on prevention, crisis counselling, research and public education.
“This is great news for our local police in Hanover and Owen Sound,” says Walker. “We agree with law-abiding Ontarians who believe crime should not pay. That’s why our government is reinvesting cash seized from criminals to help fight human trafficking.”
"We are fighting back against human traffickers by investing in training, surveillance technology and equipment to help local police and prosecutors crack down on the criminal networks that prey on and profit from young and vulnerable people in our communities," says Attorney General Doug Downey. "These community-based projects will strengthen local capacity to prevent and respond to these heinous crimes while supporting survivors."
