Space heater blamed for apartment fire in Owen Sound

The tenants of a downtown Owen Sound apartment unit have been displaced after a fire broke out Monday morning.

The Owen Sound Police Service said officers and firefighters responded to the blaze at a building on 8th Street East near 2nd Ave East. Black smoke could be seen billowing out of a second storey window with fire crews arrived at around 11:50 p.m.

The building was evacuated and the fire was quickly extinguished. The blaze was contained to a single unit, which was rendered uninhabitable. No injuries were reported.

The fire remains under investigation but the source of the blaze is believed to be a small space heater.

"The Owen Sound Police Service would like to remind the public not to leave any electric device or appliance plugged in when they leave their home for any extended period," police said in a news release.
