A sharps disposal kiosk pilot project is moving ahead in Owen Sound as part of a harm reduction strategy.
The City of Owen Sound, Grey Bruce Public Health, and Owen Sound Police Services have partnered to launch a one-year pilot.
A large sharps disposal kiosk will be installed at Carney’s Lane in downtown Owen Sound, between 2nd and 3rd Avenue East which offers a central and accessible location.
People should use the Kiosk to dispose of things like hypodermic needles, syringes, scalpels, or wires, to prevent punctures and leaks that the objects could cause. The Kiosk will be emptied and serviced regularly by a qualified contractor.
"Safe sharps disposal is an important part of harm reduction in our community. We would like to thank the Grey Bruce Health Unit and Owen Sound Police Services for their continued work in ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents," said Mayor Ian Boddy.
The total number of improperly disposed of sharps reported in Owen Sound is 116 from January to September of 2020.
A sharps disposal kiosk is already installed and in use at the Grey Bruce Public Health Unit.
