Local BIA looking for artists to spice up downtown alleys

Bruce Power has teamed up with Central Huron and the Central Huron B-I-A in inviting all area artists and would-be artists to join them in creating works of art to decorate some of the back alleys behind stores on the main street.

Central Huron Business Improvement Coordinator, Angela Smith, explains Clinton's main street is scheduled to be torn up next summer, so the back alleys will be getting more traffic than they were meant to and the goal is to make them as attractive as possible. Smith says residents will be asked to paint whatever they want on a piece of plywood, not unlike the barn quilts that have become so popular in Huron County.

Smith says that gives the community something to do through what could be a very challenging winter.

“Plywood is available now, through January. You can pick it up in Clinton at Langford Lumber and you'll register for the project there, they'll give you your free lumber and then we ask that you have your piece completed by April 1st.”

Smith says it's a great opportunity for students.

“So it would be a great opportunity for students to work on, that are home. Also perhaps for seniors that are on their own. The four by four size, we're hoping, will fit nicely on a kitchen table and seniors can work away on that throughout the winter as well.”

She says they can choose between a four by eight or a four by four sheet of plywood and adds the four by four should fit nicely on a kitchen table where seniors can work away at it during the winter. Smith says she's also hoping they can also get some the seniors in the county's retirement homes interested.

Smith says a local business, Miniature Masterpieces, that teaches painting lessons to all ages is also offering interactive online painting classes to participants that want help to get started. She says they'll present an online painting lesson each week called Huron County Community Paint Night and each episode will include some instruction, a question & answer time, as well as a show-and-tell portion so people can be inspired by what others in the community are doing.

People can register at Langford Lumber when they pick up their sheet of plywood or they can email Angela Smith at angela.smith@centralhuron.com.
