Municipalities in Grey and Bruce to split over one million dollars in gas tax funding

Some municipalities in Grey and Bruce counties will be splitting a sum of just over one million dollars in Gas Tax funding to go toward transit funding.

In a release on January 19th, the MPPs for Huron-Bruce and Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, Lisa Thompson and Bill Walker, announced that the province is providing $1,052,435 toward local transit through the Gas Tax funding. Hanover, which is the lead for Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit that serves Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Chatsworth, Hanover, Huron-Kinloss, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Southgate and West Grey, will get just over $740,000, Meaford will get almost $66,000 and Owen Sound is getting almost $246,000.

This year, Ontario is providing over 375 million dollars in Gas Tax funding to 109 municipalities that deliver public transit to 114 different communities across the province. The funding for the Gas Tax program is determined by the number of litres of gasoline sold in the province during the previous year.

Hanover receives: $740,828

Meaford receives: $65,797

Owen Sound receives: $245,810

“This is excellent news for our communities with a public transit system,” says Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker. “Funding for public transit will help make it easier to get where you need to go while supporting economic recovery in our community.”

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson agrees. “The Gas Tax program is a reliable source of long-term transit funding our local municipalities can count on to help operate and expand existing public transit services,” said Thompson. “Our government is determined to support and improving public transit in our local communities and around the province as we continue to recover from the impacts of COVID-19.”

“Our government is committed to helping municipalities sustain and improve public transit throughout the province,” says Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “Supporting transit systems is more important than ever as municipalities across Ontario struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding will help ensure people have access to safe, reliable transportation to get to work or pick up essential items like a prescription.”
