Provincial police in Huron County say they are investigating the cause of a train derailment in Goderich.
Emergency crews say they were notified of the crash by a witness shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday. According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a freight train derailed near the Goderich Grain Terminal on Harbour Street colliding with a pickup truck and an outbuilding.
Firefighters say they were able to rescue two people who were trapped inside of the pickup truck, the pair were unharmed during the incident.
The train also demolished a transport truck and trailer that had just been loaded at the grain elevators. No one was inside the truck when it was hit.
No other injuries have been reported.
Following the destruction of the transport truck, the train continued west toward the lake when approximately ten of the cars derailed which continued to strike the pickup truck and a wooden stage before it finally came to a halt.
The cost of damages has yet to be determined.
Harbour Street at the top of the beach hill remains closed as of Tuesday evening while heavy equipment operators clear the area. Police are asking pedestrians to stay away from the scene.
