Unemployment up in region, lower than province

The unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region increased to 6.3% in January, but is still well below the provincial mark.

That sits at 9%.

Both rates are unadjusted for seasonality.

Net employment in the region dropped by 3,800 with the loss of 4,800 full-time jobs and a gain of 1,100 part-time jobs. According to the Four County Labour Market Planning Board, it's the biggest change in full-time employment since the start of the pandemic earlier in 2020.

Most of the losses came in construction and manufacturing.

“Increased employment in the service sector over the last few months could indicate economic recovery for some industries. We hope this trend will continue in 2021,” said Gemma Mendez-Smith, Executive Director of the Four County Labour Market Planning Board. “Our local unemployment rate, both for December and for 2020 overall, continues to hold the lowest rate in the province.”
