Police in Owen Sound have laid charges against two teenagers after a snowmobiling accident in downtown Owen Sound.
Emergency Services were called to 11th Street East and 1st Avenue East around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in relation to a snowmobile on the ice of the inner harbour.
Police said a 17 year-old boy from Monkton had been operating a 2012 Skidoo southbound along 1st Avenue East. They said the driver rode up over a snowbank off the roadway to try and cross the inner harbour, not realizing there was a significant drop.
The snowmobile sustained moderate damage and was removed from the inner harbour by a tow truck. Police said the driver was fortunate to not have been injured in the incident.
The driver, as well as another teenager that was operating the snowmobile with him, were both charged with Operating a Motorized Snow Vehicle in the prohibited downtown area, under the City of Owen Sound By-Law.
They each were issued a $240 fine.
Police issued a reminder that snowmobiles are prohibited in the downtown core.
"With the increase in snowfall and the opening of the trails in the area, there has been a major increase in the number of snowmobilers," said police in a statement. "The roads within the City of Owen Sound that can be used by snowmobiles is very limited."
