Central Huron Mayor applauds county's new Housing Friendly Lens initiative

The Mayor of Central Huron says he strongly supports Huron County's new Housing Friendly Lens.

The Lens was presented at a recent Huron County council meeting and it was explained the goal of the Housing Friendly Lens is to make sure the county's planning documents are designed to deliver the number and the range of units the community needs.

Jim Ginn points out the county has to do more to ensure there is affordable housing here.

"We've got a lot of really good agricultural land and we don't want to be gobbling that up for, potentially, urban sprawl and not everybody can afford that big lot and big house and we need to have some more economical types of housing so that young people, particularly starting out, can afford a house."

Ginn also points out there is a serious labour shortage in Huron County and getting people to move here is difficult because there's no place for them to live.

"We have a labour shortage here in our area and we can't get people to move here because they have no place to live and they can only afford a certain size of house, you know they're starting out in life on a new job, and entry levels for sure and we've got to be to supply that."

Ginn says a recent trend has seen people in urban centres looking to move to rural communities, but they won't come out here if there's no place for them to live.
