Huron Perth Public health adds one new case of COVID-19 Thursday

Huron Perth Public Health added just one new case of COVID-19 Thursday, and reported a total of 28 active cases. One person is in hospital, and 143 people are in isolation. The number Covid-19 related fatalities stands at 49.

There are 14 active cases in Stratford, five in Huron East, three in Morris Turnberry, and one each in Goderich, North Huron, South Huron, North Perth, and St. Marys.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Miriam Klassen said there were no new outbreaks or fatalities reported.

"The outbreak at the St. Marys Memorial Hospital site of the Huron Perth Healthcare alliance remains active, and there are two active long-term care outbreaks, and two active retirement home outbreaks. I would also add that all of them are under control," she said.

Outbreaks also continue at one childcare centre and one workplace.

The Medical Officer of Health for Huron Perth said locally all residents of long term care and high risk retirement homes have now had two vaccine doses for full protection from COVID-19. Dr. Miriam Klassen said as Shipments ramp up, the next group of priority vaccine candidates will be targeted.

"Staff and essential caregivers in long term care homes, high risk retirement homes, first nations elder care homes, and any residents of those settings that have not yet received the first dose. Alternative level of care patients in hospital who have a confirmed admission to a long term care home , retirement home or other congregate care home for seniors," she explained.

She said they will also be vaccinating the highest priority health care workers, then very high priority health care workers, and indigenous adults. She added eligible candidates will be contacted in this stage. Klassen said with the arrival of vaccine doses in Huron and Perth, it is easier to reach priority populations.
