Local teachers' representative says some teachers work in close proximity during pandemic

An Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation representative says some teachers in Huron and Perth should be given priority regarding COVID-19 vaccinations.

Shane Restall is president of District 8 and says some teachers are definitely more at risk.

“Specifically, education workers who work with students with special needs, who work in very close proximity and on a day to day basis where distancing's not possible and perhaps even students who are unable to wear a mask for various health reasons,” said Restall.

Restall point out, even while everyone else was at home doing remote education during the lock down, special education teachers were required to come to school and be with their students who weren't able to learn at home.

"These education workers were asked to come into the buildings to help their students, physical distancing is impossible, even layers of protective equipment, like masking is not possible for these students," added Restall.
