Affordable housing discussion front and centre

The Mayor of Goderich says council spent more than an hour discussing the housing shortage in Huron County.

John Grace says council listened to two presentations on the shortage of affordable housing. One was from the county's Economic Development Department and the other from the town's Economic Development Department.

He says the situation has reached a crisis stage in the county.

Grace says the issue will be coming back to council at their meeting on September 7th and he says one of the things they're going to look at is a designated Community Improvement Plan for specific areas in the community.

“But first and foremost, we need to hire a professional to come in and tell us what the opportunities are and tell us what direction we should be going in when it comes to community improvement plans, any tax relief,” said Grace.

Grace adds they also have to look at any incentive they can offer to encourage developers to build affordable and attainable housing in Goderich.
