The Mayor of South Bruce Peninsula says party time is over at short-term rental properties in Sauble Beach.
Janice Jackson announcing new rules on her Facebook page which includes the licensing of rentals that will allow town staff to regulate them.
Mayor Jackson says problems with loud parties by short-term renters have been a nuisance in South Bruce Peninsula for several years, and hopes that a new licensing system, including a one-time $300 registration fee and an annual license fee of $500, will at least "make owners think twice about who they're renting to". Jackson says no one will be fined under the program with the exception of those that do not have a license.
Those that choose not to register a property could see hefty fines.
Jackson also noted that there is a "three-strike clause", which is triggered if police or by-law officers are called to the property three times for complaints, noting "the complaints have really ramped up over the last two years, and we realize that the only possible way to get any kind of control on this issue is to regulate them".
The regulations will also new rules for rental properties to gain a license, which include working smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, a limit on the number of occupants and that a property manager be within 30 minutes of the cottage that is available 24/7 to address issues that arise.
