Main Street revitalization plan in Bayfield approved

Councillor Bill Whetstone says it now looks like the Municipality of Bluewater will be sending out requests for tenders for the Main Street Revitalization in Bayfield by the end of this year.

The design was approved by council this week.

Whetstone says they were able to incorporate most of the things residents had been asking for, starting with the request that they hydro lines be buried underground, but there were others.

"Making sure the road stays wide, cause it's a nice big, wide road, so I believe it's less than a foot that it's going to be coming in now, narrowing, so staff's done, I thought, a fantastic job of getting that to a point where that's going to be,” said Whetstone.

Residents also wanted to see the sidewalks narrowed to minimize the use of concrete, and more trees on the main street.

“So the sidewalks were shortened, I think the average width out there is, for the sidewalks, is 2.2 metres. And it's not your traditional sidewalk, it's an exposed aggregate that's going to be coloured, like an earthy tone, to make it as much look like gravel that we currently have today,” added Whetstone.

The work will have to be done in phases so that the main street isn't closed during the summer, so Whestone anticipates the Main Street Revitalization in Bayfield will be completed late in 2023.
