Police confirm identity of North York woman who drowned at local hotel

Grey Bruce OPP are confirming the identity of a woman who drowned at a Chatsworth motel.

Police say they were called to reports of a drowning on August 18th around 5:44 p.m.

They say lifesaving efforts were attempted but they were unsuccessful and 23-year-old Hellen Nyabuto of North York could not be revived.

In a tragic twist, media reports say Nyabuto was streaming live when she began having trouble in the deep end of the pool. The Toronto Star says it viewed the Facebook Live video before it was removed from the platform and it shows Nyabuto just off camera frantically calling for help. The feed continues for several hours, in eerie silence, before the young woman was found.

The Star says Nyabuto was a personal support worker at the Country Lane long-term care home in Chatsworth.
