A new affordable housing project was recently announced in Wiarton.
A release from the Town of South Bruce Peninsula says the Wiarton Propeller Club will be shutting down, and donating the building and land to the town for a future affordable housing build. The Wiarton Propeller Club stated in the release that "due to rising costs to operate the building, a decline in rental revenue and a lack of volunteers," the club has decided to shut down their operation. Now, the municipality will seek an affordable housing opportunity at the site.
The release also states that "Bruce County Housing Services manages the administration and directly provides housing supports and services in Bruce County," but this project will allow the Town of South Bruce Peninsula to directly oversee a local project to support the local need for affordable housing.
“With a lack of attainable housing in our area, this gift from the Propeller Club Board of Directors gives the Town a rare and unique opportunity to steer a critical housing project in support of our residents who are in great need of accommodation they can afford” said Town of South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson.
