2022 Municipal election preview: Hanover

Two candidates are running for mayor in the town of Hanover.

Incumbent Sue Paterson is seeking a third term as mayor. Her opponent this year is Rob McKean.

When asked why she's seeking a third term as mayor, Paterson said "It's a very rewarding job, I love this community and I want to be part of its future. We are an active community centre, and I want to keep it that way." McKean says when it comes to issues in Hanover heading into the election, there is "a collection of smaller issues. I can't point to any one in particular and say this is a glaring problem. There's a whole lot of issues that the town is facing. I believe that sometimes you need a fresh perspective on it."

McKean also refused to fault Paterson over her actions and policy decisions as mayor, saying "When you're in the position, you get a totally different view of what's going on. I can't say one way or the other that what she's done is good or bad. She's been working hard at it, and I commend her for that." Paterson says she would try and use a third term as mayor to continue the growth experienced over the last several years in Hanover, saying "In order to accommodate that growth, we'll need to increase our tax base, and our assessment. To do that, we need to continue with our growth strategy plan. That will offer job creation, increase supply and choice of housing."
