Police investigating 'sextortion" case involving minor

Police are warning people against sharing intimate images or videos with strangers online following a reported local scam.

Perth County OPP say a 13-year-old North Perth youth was victimized after meeting an individual on a popular social media app. Police say the victim shared intimate photos, and the suspect threatened that the images would be shared with others if the victim didn't send more photos.

"There is always a risk in sharing any personal or sexually explicit images over the internet. Think twice before you send or post anything. Before you hit "send" remember that you cannot control where this image or video may travel," the release stated. "If someone starts demanding payment and threatening you regarding photos or videos, never pay the money, block them from all social media, screen shot messages they sent you immediately contact police."

If you are a victim of a "sextortion" scam call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at 1-888-495-8501.
