Huron County's Immigration Partnership Manager says since the war in Ukraine started, about 70y people from Ukraine have arrived in Huron County.
Mark Nonkes says there could be more, but there are about 70 that they've interacted with. He adds says about 20 to 30 people have already found jobs. Nonkes says partly because of the work force issues facing employers, they're finding jobs very quickly.
“Usually within about a week of starting looking they're finding a job, whether it's in the manufacturing sector or skilled trades or whatever experience they bring with them, they often can find jobs that reflect their professional background in their country," Nonkes explained. “Some of the people are going to manufacturing jobs where they get trained as they get hired and others are going to more professional jobs where they're using their skills that they had before they came to Canada and are continuing with their career,"
Nonkes also points out the lack of housing continues to be a challenge, and if there was more available housing, more people would be able to relocate in Huron County, and more of those people would be able to find jobs here.
