St. Marys resident loses $16K in grandparent scam

Stratford Police are looking for anyone who might have video surveillance after a St. Marys resident was defrauded out of $16,000.

The Salina Street North resident fell for the Grandparent Scam after being contacted by a person claiming to be a Brantford Police officer. According to police, the scammer said a payment could ensure the victim's grandson was released from custody without a criminal record.

An unknown male picked up money at the victim's home, once on February 9 and again on February 13, both just after noon. The suspect is a white man, about 5'8", with black hair and a slim build. He was wearing a medical mask, and was on foot.

Anyone with information or footage can contact Stratford police at 519-271-4147.
