Suspicious man sought by police after incidents targeting children

Hanover police have received reports of two separate incidents involving an older man who could pose a threat to children in the community.

Police said the first incident happened at about 3:20 p.m. on Wednesday in the area of 13th Street and 9th Avenue. A man allegedly pulled over and exited his vehicle, approaching a youth who was walking home from school at the time. According to police, the man offered up a box of "Pot of Gold" chocolates, instructing the reluctant youth to give it to his mother.

The next day around 5:30 p.m., police allege a man with a similar physical appearance was seen taking photos of children in the backyard of a home near 14th Street and 9th Avenue - just around the block from Wednesday's incident. The man reportedly circled the block several times in a Volkswagen SUV, which is believed to be a Tiguan. No contact was made with the children involved in this matter, police confirm.

The Hanover Police Service is probing these incidents to establish whether or not they are connected. Both situations involved a man described as having grey hair, grey facial hair, and possibly wearing prescription glasses. Officers are eager to identify and speak with this person.

"As a reminder, parents are encouraged to speak with their children about street safety and talking with strangers," Hanover police said in a statement.

Anyone with information that could assist in this investigation is asked to contact local police at 519-364-2411 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
