Police warn public of rental property scam in Mitchell

After two people attempting to lease a house in Mitchell became victims of fraud, Perth County OPP are reminding residents in the rental market to keep an eye out for red flags.

Police say the two victims found a property to rent in Mitchell and submitted an application. The supposed applicants were then asked to send a security deposit, as well as first and last months rent and utilities, and police say a total of $2,700 was sent to an unknown suspect.

The timeline of the transaction was not specified, but police began investigations on Thursday.

Anyone with information regarding this indicent is asked to contact Perth County OPP directly at 1-888-310-1122 or submit an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Police shared some tips to help other members of the community avoid getting involved in a similar situation.

"If you are looking to rent an apartment or house, request to meet in person, at the prospective residence," police advised. "Be suspicious of requests for payment prior to singing a contract, especially those that require you to act immediately."

If you or someone you know becomes a victim of fraud, the crime can be reported to your local police service and also to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Police say you can submit a report even if you suffered no financial loss.
