Huron County resident loses thousands in bank scam

Huron County OPP officers are investigating a report of a phone scam in which the fraudster posed as a bank employee.

A Central Huron resident told police Monday they lost almost $15,000 from their bank account.

Police were told the victim was contacted by phone by someone posing as a bank employee who needed the victim's banking information. The victim was convinced that the caller was legitimate and provided the information. The victim later discovered that almost $15,000 had been stolen from their line of credit account.

According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), fraud reports totaled a staggering $530 million in victim losses in 2022. That's up about 40 per cent from the unprecedented $380 million in losses recorded in 2021. Police estimate just 10 per cent of victims report scams and frauds.
