Heavy rainfall on Wednesday prompted a flood warning from Saugeen Conservation for a number of municipalities in Brocton, Kincardine, and Arran-Elderslie, but that has now been downgraded to a flood watch, mirroring the situation in other areas maintained by Saugeen Conservation. The flood watch remains in effect until further notice.
"Over the past 24 hours, a significant rainfall event was experienced in our watershed bringing upwards of 60 [millimetres] of rain," read a statement from Saugeen Conservation. "This rainfall has caused numerous watercourses within the municipalities of Kincardine, Arran-Elderslie, and Brockton to overtop their banks. Many roadside ditches are full and beginning to flood low-lying roadways and adjacent areas."
Water levels in some areas have risen by over a metre due to rainfall alone. Conservationists expect levels will continue to rise rapidly throughout Thursday. Residents are being advised to use extreme caution near all watercourses and flooded areas. The public is asked to avoid walking or driving though flooded areas as well.
"Landowners are advised to check private dams, culverts, and catch basins to ensure they are free from debris and functioning as intended," the release stated.
A rainfall warning previously in effect for much of the region has ended.
