United Way Perth Huron is working with the Goderich Huron YMCA to support its new Goderich Youth Collective leadership program.
Director of Governance and Community Impact Megan Partridge says local volunteers had identified youth isolation as a significant concern, so they're very excited to help support the program.
“It's going to be a 16-week opportunity for youth to get out with their peers and learn about healthy living, active living but also work on leadership and work on mental health all of those things together,” she said.
The program is open to anyone between the ages of 14 and 17 and membership with the YMCA is not required.
Partridge says there will be a physical aspect to the program because they know that leads to life skills and better mental health, and it will be around leadership and around different skills.
“This is a new program in the area, so forming that based on what the youth are telling the YMCA at this point is kind of how things are going to roll out," she said. "Similar programming has been done in other areas but the Y is wanting to make sure that it is fitting for the youth that is here.”
More information about the program as well as an application form can be found on the United Way Perth Huron website.
