Seed libraries sprouting up at Bruce County branches

A new program is sprouting up at Bruce County Public Libraries.

Starting this spring, they're launching seed libraries at eight branches across the county. Seeds will be available free of charge for anyone interested in growing local strains of plants.

Brooke McLean, Director of Bruce County Libraries, says they hope some participants will pay it forward.

"What we're also hoping is some of the people who take the seeds will harvest the seeds when they harvest their vegetables or flowers, and then return them to the library," she said. "We've also provided some online and in-person instruction on how people can do that."

The seed libraries were spearheaded by Program Coordinator Nancy Kuhl, who says there's been lots of community support to help the idea grow.

“Putting the seed libraries together has truly been a community connection project. The generosity of local businesses in donating funds and supplies, local youth building the boxes to house the seed packages, and local community members donating extra and unused seeds has brought the libraries from idea to reality,” said Kuhl.

That support included a $3,000 donation from NWMO toward the new hydroponic unit, seeds, and materials. Also, the Saugeen Shores Senior School’s grade 11 construction class made 37 boxes to contain the seeds.

Seed Libraries can be found in Chesley, Kincardine, Lucknow, Southampton, Teeswater, Tobermory, Walkerton and Wiarton.

On top of seeds, there will soon be a hydroponic unit coming to the Teeswater branch. The unit will grow herbs, which patrons can come in and snip or grab a pre-cut bunch from staff.
