Stratford businessman appointed to the Order of Canada

For his visionary leadership as the founding director of the Toronto Blue Jays club, and for his entrepreneurship and philanthropy, Don McDougall was appointed to the Order of Canada.

McDougall is best known for his time at the Labatt Brewing Company, where he was named president in 1973.

As president of the brewery, he was a major part of the team that brought the Toronto Blue Jays into existence in 1976. He was the baseball franchise's founding director.

McDougall was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, as a builder, in 2002. He was also inducted into the London Business Hall of Fame in 2009.

"Today, we recognize individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to our society. A group of individuals who, through dedication and ajuinnata—perseverance—make our communities and our country better every day," said Governor General Mary Simon about Friday's appointments.

Since its creation in 1967, the Order of Canada has honoured more than 7,800 people. The Governor General made 85 new appointments on Friday.
