Wingham emergency department closed most of the weekend

The emergency department in Wingham will be closed for most of the weekend.

Late Friday evening, the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance announced the emergency room in Wingham will close beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday and reopen again the same day at 7 p.m.

The closure is due to a nursing sick call. The decision was made after all other efforts were exhausted to fill the shift, hospital officials said.

The emergency department will then close again on Sunday, July 16, beginning at 5 a.m. It will reopen the following morning, Monday, July 17, at 7 a.m.

"All efforts were undertaken to fill this shift," read a statement from the hospital.

The next closest hospitals are Listowel, Goderich, Palmerston, Seaforth, Kincardine, and Walkerton. Nearby Clinton will also be closed on Sunday.

"This is a temporary measure and our staff, board, physicians and leadership regret that we have to take this step," read a statement from the hospital. "We are thankful for the support of our staff and physicians and appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during this time."

Residents are advised to double check with other hospitals before attending them to ensure they are open. If it is a medical emergency, call 911.
