Parking issues arising in local downtown

Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn says parking is becoming a problem in Clinton and council would like to try and stay ahead of it.

“The biggest issue is that as we get more buildings in the upstairs of the downtown converted over to apartments, there's no parking spots with those buildings. And then you have your regular people coming in for the retail shops that need somewhere to park," Ginn explained.

But Ginn says mainly the problem is people converting houses over to apartments and the parking issue is only going to get worse so they want to get ahead of it.

Ginn says they're looking at a few options.

“Just areas where there's a possibility for new parking lots and what the existing ones are, an inventory, and then we do have some municipally-owned ones and we'd look for some recommendations as far as do we assign parking spots on municipal parking lots to certain tenants," added Ginn.

That would then give those tenants the right to park there rather than people coming downtown to shop.

Ginn adds things like snow removal could further complicate the problem, so they want to bring some consultants in rather than put the burden entirely on staff to solve the problem.
