Several Perth County hospitals receive funding for critical repairs, upgrades

Hospitals in Perth County will share part of more than $6 million in provincial funding announced Wednesday to support necessary work needed to maintain facilities.

Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae shared that through the Ontario government’s Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund (HIRF), $6.6-million is being allocated across four hospitals in the region including, Listowel Memorial Hospital, North Wellington Health Care Corporation, St. Marys Memorial Hospital, and Stratford General Hospital.

The investment will help hospitals with critical upgrades, repairs and overall maintenance of the ageing buildings.

“This funding is essential for our hospitals to continue to provide the best care possible in our communities,” said Rae. “The highest quality of care requires the highest quality equipment and facilities. This funding demonstrates our government’s commitment to our local hospitals."

Funding for each hospital is as follows:

Listowel Memorial Hospital: $2,854,377

North Wellington Health Care Corporation: $1,335,173

St. Marys Memorial Hospital: $396,461

Stratford General Hospital: $2,086,448

Mental health supports in the area are also receiving similar funding.

The Canadian Mental Health Association’s Waterloo Wellington Branch, and the Guelph Community Health Centre are receiving $28,454 and $404,504 respectively, through the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund (CIRF).

The CEO of the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance said it will use funds to enhance its Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, while the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance said it will also complete upgrades to its ventilation system, along with window and door replacements, loading dock improvements, and fire suppression system enhancements.

The HIRF was established in 1999. It was created to provide annualized funding to assist hospitals in renewing their facilities. Grants through the HIRF supplement hospital needs on a priority basis, allowing the hospitals to decide where to invest the money so projects can be completed more quickly.
