Investment scam costs resident over $100,000

A recent investment recovery scam has cost a Mapleton resident a hefty sum.

Wellington County OPP were contacted on July 24 regarding a fraud. The victim told investigators they had lost $109,000 in an investment scam involving bitcoin. The victim then paid an additional $4,000 to a company that claimed it could recover their lost investment. Investigation determined that this company was also fraudulent. 

The Wellington County OPP Crime Unit is continuing to investigate this incident. 

Police are reminding everyone to be extremely wary of fraudulent investment, and investment recovery scams. If you feel you have been the victim of fraud, report it to your local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's online reporting system, or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. If not a victim, you should still report the incident to the CAFC.
