The Listowel Cyclones home opener Saturday will be as much about the past as it is the present.
The organization is celebrating 50 years of Cyclones hockey with alumni games and the spotlight game, a GOJHL contest versus the Stratford Warriors.
Club president Greg McNevan says there will also be some surprises.
"We're going to have some memorabilia from the past up in the hall with the blueline club all afternoon and during our home opener," explains McNevan. "We also have a retro jersey from back in the very first season. We came as close as we could to that jersey and we will be wearing that Saturday night."
The alumni games start at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the opening face-off for the Cyclones game is set for 7:30 p.m.
McNevan is hoping the fans can come out and take part in Saturday's festivities and says the team has always had great support from the community and that support continues this season.
"If we are not the smallest center in the GOJHL, we are definitely one of the smallest, and we have the biggest support of the community."
And while Saturday will feature past accomplishments, the focus is on the future.
"We're going to have a very competitive team," says McNevan. "Our goal here is to obviously win a Cherrey Cup and I think we have the pieces to do that."
The Listowel Cyclones have won a Sutherland Cup (2018) and three Cherrey Cups. The 2005 win against the Owen Sound Greys was under the former Mid-Western Junior Hockey League banner. The more recent wins came in 2017 and 2018 as part of the Midwest conference in the GOJHL.
CKNX will have the call for you Saturday night starting with the OHA This Week at 7 p.m. followed by the game at 7:30 p.m.
