South Huron seeking applications for opening on council

South Huron council will soon be putting out a call for nominees to fill its vacant seat.

The Municipality has been down one councillor since Marc Denomme provided his letter of resignation on September 8.

The seat was officially declared vacant on September 17.

South Huron has 60 days from that point to fill the role, with Councillor Aaron Neeb saying at Monday's meeting that the appointment process makes the most sense.

"I think opening it up to a call for nominees allows both members of the public but also those people who ran in the last election to put their names forward," he said. "I think with a by-election its costly to move forward for our staff during our budget period... And I think this is a democratic way of doing it as well, where we have our Special Council Meeting and we'll hear in open session why some of these individuals feel they can fill the seat."

Acting Clerk Alex Wolfe said, despite Denomme representing Ward 2, there's no limitations on who can apply to fill the seat.

"Sec 29 (sub 4) of the Municipal Elections Act states that 'if a municipality is divided into wards, a person is eligible to be nominated for an office in an election in any ward of the municipality,'" said Wolfe. "So there would be no restrictions to anyone who could (apply), whether they submit an application or ran for another position in a previous election."

A notice of the vacancy with details on how to apply will be posted to the municipality's website soon.

The deadline to submit applications is October 27. Council will then hold a special meeting on November 8 where they will hear from all applicants before voting on who they want to appoint to the vacant seat.
