Southampton compost site closed by discovery of bones

The municipal compost site in Southampton is closed until further notice after bones were discovered in the area.

Saugeen Shores Police say they were alerted to the discovery at the compost site on Concession 14 on the morning of October 19.

They ask that the public avoid the area in the coming days as police conduct their investigation, which included bringing in an anthropologist to determine the age and origin of the bones. A release later on the evening of October 19 from Grey Bryce OPP confirmed that the bones were determined to be human remains and historic in nature, and therefore a criminal investigation is not necessary.

Police say there is no concern for public safety and that more updates will be provided when they become available, including when the compost site may reopen.
