Hanover Police Service have charged a man with public mischief after allegedly making a false police report that that he was mugged earlier this month.
Police say they got a report on Sunday, October 15 about a street robbery that occurred on October 13 in a back alley in the downtown core.
The victim reported that he was robbed by two males who had assaulted him from behind, threw him to the ground and kicked him before stealing his cell phone and wallet. The victim said the suspects ran from the scene and the victim walked home with minor injuries.
However, as a result of the investigation, Hanover Police claim the reported robbery did not occur and the alleged victim had fabricated the entire story in an attempt to get a free cell phone through a social service agency.
A 64-year-old Hanover man was arrested for public mischief, as well as breach of probation and breach of a conditional sentence order.
He was held for a bail hearing and later released with a court date in Walkerton.
