Weapons seized during traffic stop

Saugeen Shores police seized nine firearms from a man prohibited from having any.

Just after 2:15 p.m. on Friday, police received the report of a suspected impaired driver in the area of North Rankin Street and Turner Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they observed a man driving his vehicle through the parking lot of a local business and pulled him over.

The driver was determined to be impaired during the traffic stop. During that time, police saw several cans of alcohol as well as a large gun cabinet and ammunition box inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle was completed and nine firearms were found.

A check of the driver's background found that he's currently got a court order prohibiting him from having any guns.

A 37-year-old Port Elgin man has been charged with the following offences:

  • Operation While Impaired

  • Operation While Impaired (80+)

  • Possession of Firearms contrary to Prohibition Order x 9

  • Possession of Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

  • Careless Transportation of a Firearm

The investigation is ongoing.
