As the holidays quickly approach, the Wingham Salvation Army is looking for one last push of community support for its Christmas Hamper program.
"We've noticed this year that there seems to be as much need, if not more than ever, in Wingham, and surrounding communities," said Captain Brian Dueck, pastor and director at the location. "We're really seeing high numbers and folks are registering right up getting close to Christmas."
Registration to receive a hamper closed at the start of December, but many are still calling. The Salvation Army in Wingham currently has 120 families on its list, with more expected.
Dueck said it's his first year in Wingham and it's been great to see the amount of support and love shown to those in need.
"To make a Christmas meal, we're trying to fill hampers with turkeys, stuffing, canned vegetables right now would be helpful, monetary donations allow us to buy a few more turkeys if we run short," said Dueck. "Toys, of course, are always helpful."
Anything that doesn't get used for hampers will be saved and given towards fire victims or other people in need in the area.
"Thank you to the community," he said. "Its support has been amazing and it's helping make Christmas happen for lots of households who simply can't afford it this year. I think many of us know what that feels like, especially with the economy."
Dueck said in addition to donations, the Wingham Salvation Army is also still looking for kettle volunteers.
