Should the winter weather require a highway closure in Saugeen Shores, the signs will remain where they've always been, after an inquiry into moving the road closures came up empty.
Last year, the Community Services and Operations Department requested the town look into moving the Highway 21 closure south of Port Elgin from Concession Road 6 to 4.
Part of the issue was that the current location strands residents that live on Airport Line, as well as potential guests of a hotel along Hwy 21 that is set to be completed in a few years.
Staff met with the Ministry of Transportation and heard their issues regarding a move.
The MTO highlighted safety concerns, as proposed location has a speed limit of 80 km/h compared to 50 at the current one and visibility is also reduced due to no overhead lighting and the fact that it's at the bottom of two hills.
They also noted the difficulty rerouting traffic and questions about liability of road maintenance were the closure to be moved. Saugeen Shores ultimately decided to drop the issue.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau said they'll instead effort to increase communication with those impacted.
"The important thing is making sure we communicate adequately to those folks in the community and neighbourhood... as well as the hotel and ownership there, and anybody else in areas where the roads close frequently to talk about how they should plan for that and be prepared for that eventuality in case it should arise," he said.
