Students who make up the Listowel District Secondary School's Blackdoor Theatre group are on the verge of a very cool accomplishment.
The group has been selected to move on to the regional competition for the NTS Dramafest in Gravenhurst, happening next week. Teacher Heather Dalgliesh says they competed in the Huron and Perth regional competition last week.
"We were selected as one of two, St. Mikes was the other one selected from our district, to represent Huroin/Perth for the regional competition that's happening in Gravenhurst next week. So the kids worked really hard, we got a Canadian play called 'The Butterfly Queen' from Christian Kiley. They worked really hard over the last 5 months and they were putting on school performances a couple of weeks ago and then they performed in Blyth on March 23," Dalgliesh shared.
However, the cost to go to the competition is hefty. Dalgliesh says they are reaching out to the community and local businesses to help fund the trip in any way possible.
"We're also accepting donations either to the Foundation for Education (through Avon Maitland District School Board), and they will direct the money to us, or there's also the possibility of donating right at the school. You can also donate through any of the cast members or myself," said Dalgliesh.
The link to donate can be found here: http://foundationforeducation.ca/.
The total cost of the trip is quite expensive, and Dalgliesh says they have gotten some sponsorships already, but any help from the community is welcome. She notes that any donation over $20 is eligible for a tax receipt.
"Currently we have been lucky enough to gain about $750 in sponsorships and donations. It's going to cost about $5,000 for the students to go, between the cost of the buses and the hotels to stay in, as well as the registration fee for the event itself," added Dalgliesh.
You can also donate if you're interested by contacting Listowel District Secondary School directly, or by emailing Dalgliesh for details at heather.dalgliesh@ed.amdsb.ca.
