Hanover Police recover stolen vehicle after violent struggle

A man and woman are facing a slew of charges after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle into a wall in an effort to avoid arrest.

Around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Hanover Police responded to a report of two people sleeping in a vehicle parked at an apartment complex in the 100-block of 11th Avenue.

Police say they recognized the pair as having committed a theft in town on Friday.

Allegedly, when officers attempted to arrest the duo, the man jumped into the drivers seat and began partially dragging an officer who was in the passenger seat "trying to effect their arrest."

The vehicle crashed into the side of an apartment building.

After that, the 39-year-old man allegedly attempted to flee on foot and officers subdued him by a taser. The 23-year-old woman was also taken into custody.

One Hanover officer and both suspects sustained minor injuries.

The exterior wall of the apartment building and the stolen vehicle also received minor damages as a result.

The suspects face a list of charges including theft under $5000, dangerous operation, assault with a weapon, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property.

Police say they later determined the vehicle had been stolen from the South Bruce detachment and the man and woman of no fixed address were wanted in several regions.

The man is currently wanted on 27 criminal and drug charges in four policing jurisdictions in Ontario, while the woman is wanted on 10 criminal charges in two jurisdictions.

The suspects were held and later remanded into custody at their bail hearings.
