A traditional powwow is to be held in Owen Sound at the Alexandra Community School on June 21.
Community members are invited to join the school from 2 to 6 p.m. on Indigenous Peoples Day.
"We are holding the traditional powwow because as a school, we've been working really hard to build a sense through not only truth and reconciliation but the fact that every child matters everywhere," said Principal Staci Marck. "It's really important that we learn about the culture of the Indigenous peoples that came before us. We believe it's important for students to know about their own culture and respect and understand the diversity that exists among other cultures."
The event will feature a variety of vendors, food trucks, a firekeeper, drumming, various dancers, and more. Community organizations, such as Children's Aid, Bruce Power, Owen Sound Public Library, and the United Way.
"We hope that people will learn to honour the rich culture, history, and contributions of Indigenous peoples not only to our Grey Bruce area, but all across Canada," said Marck.
There will also be raffles attendees can participate in. All excess money will go towards the school's fundraiser for an accessible playground.
