Huron OPP officers participated in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraiser for Special Olympics on Wednesday.
Special Olympians, police officers, family members, friends, and community supporters hit the pavement to increase awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics.
Constable Craig Soldan said up to 70 participants accompanied the torch during runs through Wingham, Goderich, Clinton, and Blyth.
"If you saw us, you would have seen just a lot of smiles on their faces. And we really enjoyed it, too," revealed Soldan. "The officers that go out really have a lot of fun, and we like to get engaged in these types of things. So it's a great day."
The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $75 million in Canada since its inception. The Huron County run was again successful.
"The total fundraising was just over $4,385 and that was from generous donations from the public, as well as the officers involved, who chipped in a little bit too," said Soldan. "So we appreciate everyone's generosity and support."
The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics.
"I met a young lady that had gone to the Special Olympics, out in Calgary," Soldan shared. "She showed me two of her medals. She had two silver medals from bowling, and she was just so proud of them, and she carried them around, and was showing everyone. So it was just really neat to see the end result. And give them the opportunity to compete in their sport."
Soldan said the Huron County run is organized by Sergeant Russ Nesbitt and Sergeant Wade Smith.
"The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a highlight on my calendar, and I encourage you to join us to cheer on and celebrate these courageous and dedicated athletes. Whether it's a honk of the horn, a high-five, some cheering from the sidelines or a donation to support the cause, it really is appreciated," said Nesbitt.
Nesbitt has been involved in the event for over 27 years. Participants and supporters celebrated the successful event with a gathering and BBQ at McGee Motors located on Suncoast Drive East in Goderich.
