New pedestrian walkway opens in Bayfield

Bayfield residents celebrated the grand opening of a new pedestrian walkway connecting the village to the Bayfield River Flats Natural Area, eliminating the need to cross Highway 21 or drive to access the nature area.

The walkway, funded by over $70,000 in community donations and support, was unveiled during a ceremony featuring local musicians and acknowledgments of the area's indigenous peoples.

Roger Lewington, Past Chair of the Huron Tract Land Trust Conservancy (HTLTC) and a leader of the fundraising campaign, praised the community's efforts. "It’s amazing what our volunteers and donors have accomplished," he said.

Max Morden, HTLTC Chair, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the collaboration and dedication that brought the project to life.

“This is an amazing community, you’re an amazing group,” he said. “Thank you to the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association for the incredible work they’ve done, for their vision in bringing this together, for their passion and perseverance to bring this to fruition,” Morden said. “They couldn’t have done it without the support of the community, the volunteers and donors who’ve supported this. Thanks to you all for the way you’ve supported this project. (The walkway project is) a tremendous example of what can be done when a community comes together and forms partnerships and does something really special for nature.”

Dawson Hallahan, representing MPP Lisa Thompson, read her remarks, emphasizing the project's importance for rural communities. Mayor Paul Klopp of Bluewater and Kelly Vader, President of the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA), also spoke, underlining the community spirit and the walkway's positive impact.

The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting, marking the official opening of the new path.
