The Owen Sound Police Service says a man who died during a fire last month died from injuries he sustained when he fell from the roof.
Police responded alongside the Owen Sound Fire Department and local EMS crews just after 1:30 p.m. on June 30 to reports of a fire at an apartment on 3rd Avenue East.
When crews arrived, they found a citizen performing life-saving measures on a 58-year-old man who had escaped a burning apartment that was billowing smoke. Police have determined the man had exited the unit through a window of the third-floor apartment, gaining access to the roof where he tragically slipped and fell.
The man was transported to the Brightshores Health System Owen Sound hospital site, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Office of the Fire Marshall, the Owen Sound Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch, the Office of the Coroner and the Owen Sound Fire Department investigated the circumstances of the fire. The investigation concluded the man died as a result of blunt force trauma resulting from his fall.
At this time, this incident is considered non-suspicious and is not believed to be criminal in nature.
