The Wingham and District Hospital's emergency department closed suddenly on Saturday afternoon, due to what management is calling staffing shortages.
The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance sent out notice shortly after 2 p.m. that the ED would close immediately and reopen at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
"This is a temporary measure and our staff, board, physicians and leadership regret that we have to take this step," read the release.
Ambulances will bypass the hospital during the closure period and travel to the nearest open department. Closest hospitals include Listowel, Goderich, Palmerston, Seaforth, Kincardine, Walkerton and Clinton (which is only open until 6 p.m.)
