Council denies ATV club's request for access to municipal trail

A decision has been made regarding potential ATV use on a popular North Perth trail.

Manager of Facilities, Jeff Newell, says back in May a survey was made available to residents to voice support or opposition to the North Perth and District ATV Club having access to a section of the North Perth trail.

At the August 12 council meeting, the survey results were made available and Newell says the results helped sway the decision on the matter.

"What it showed was there was 57 percent of survey respondents that indicated they were not in favour of ATV use on the trail. We also received 5 delegations on the evening of the council meeting, and I think a lot of that information, as well as the survey results, helped council make a decision," Newell shared.

Ultimately, that decision came down to what was shown in the survey, which did have over 700 responses.

"So the end result of the presentation at the meeting was that council denied the request from the North Perth and District ATV Club for access to a section of the North Perth Trail," Newell stated. "There was a number of issues that were identified. Safety was certainly one of the issues that was brought up, as well as trail maintenance and environmental impact."

Newell adds the municipality will work with the ATV club on road signage to allow for safer access to certain roadways in the municipality.
