Police remind the public of water safety measures after locating overdue kayaker

Huron County OPP are warning the public to take extra precautions on the water after finding an overdue kayaker.

Police were called just before 6 p.m. on August 19 by a family member after they became concerned for their loved one, who had departed on a solo kayak adventure from Auburn at 11:00 a.m. that day, but had not yet reached Benmiller as planned.

The kayaker was an experienced boater, but did not bring a cellphone on the trip, so police could not pinpoint their location.

Luckily, officers did locate the kayaker on the water near the Benmiller bridge just after 7:00 p.m. and the kayaker was in good health.

Police are reminding boating and hiking enthusiasts to prepare for their adventures properly. Always provide your plans to your friends or family and carry a fully charged cellphone along with emergency supplies in the event things don't go as smoothly as planned.
