Man who barricaded himself in Stratford home charged with assault, forcible confinement

Charges have now been laid against a man who barricaded himself inside a Stratford home late last week following what police called an act of "intimate partner violence."

Stratford police were called to Mornington Street around 5:30 a.m. last Thursday after a person who was being held against their will escaped from a home and was found walking down the street.

Officers went to the suspect home, where a man barricaded himself inside.

He surrendered after several hours of negotiations with police.

A 51-year-old man is charged with 18 offences including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, aggravated sexual assault, forcible confinement, uttering threats, firearms offences, and breach of released order. The man remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Police have offered their thanks to the bystander who stopped to help the victim in the case.
