Humane Society appeals for donations for kitten's life-saving surgery

On the same day a five-month-old stray kitten goes under the knife in an attempt to save her life, the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth is turning to the public to help cover the cost.

The orange kitten, named Hopscotch, was recently found suffering from a severe leg injury that left her in pain and struggling to walk. It was determined Hopscotch would need to undergo surgery to stabilize her leg with surgical implants, with a chance the leg will need to be amputated if the damage turns out to be too severe. That surgery was set to take place on Tuesday.

The humane society estimates the cost of the young kitten's surgery and follow-up care could go as high as $5,000 before she is ready for adoption. The estimate includes the cost of the leg surgery, spay surgery, medication, and ongoing care.

"Hopscotch has shown so much strength and spirit despite her injury,” Dr. Meghan Wallace, the humane society's veterinarian, said in a statement. “With this surgery, she can live a full and pain-free life. She just needs a little help to get there.”

The humane society issued an appeal to the public ahead of the surgery, asking for one-time donations.

"Every animal deserves a chance to live a full and happy life, and Hopscotch is no exception," said Humane Society Chief Executive Officer Victoria Baby. "With the generosity of our supporters, we can ensure Hopscotch and animals like her get the critical care they need to thrive.”

Baby noted that any donations left over after the costs for Hopscotch are covered will be used to care for other animals at the shelter. Update about Hopscotch will be posted on the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth on social media channels and in its newsletter.
