Hundreds of Grade 7 and 8 students from across Perth County are rolling up their sleeves and diving into the world of skilled trades this week, as the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board kicks off its highly anticipated Elementary Skilled Trades Event at the Stratford Rotary Complex.
Running from April 22 to 25, the hands-on event gives students an early glimpse into career possibilities in the skilled trades, with support from Conestoga College and industry mentors from the Perth-Huron Builders’ Association (PHBA).
Grade 8 students will participate in immersive workshops focused on electrical and plumbing, guided by seasoned professionals who bring real-world expertise into the classroom setting. Each session lasts 2.5 hours and is designed to give students a feel for what working in those trades is really like.
Meanwhile, Grade 7 students will explore 10 different skilled trades stations set up around the arena floor, spending 20 to 25 minutes at each. These stations—staffed by experienced tradespeople—offer opportunities to try out tools, techniques, and get inspired by people passionate about their work.
“For many students, this may be their first opportunity to experience hands-on skilled trades,” said Mark Flanagan, SHSM and OYAP leader for the board. "It could very well be the moment a student discovers their path—a spark that leads to a future career in the trades."
The event is part of the board’s broader focus on experiential learning and aims to highlight the growing opportunities in the skilled trades sector. With a hands-on, mentor-led approach, the event is designed to build confidence, break stereotypes, and help students envision a future in the trades.
The board invites community members and education partners to witness the initiative in action throughout the week.
